Midday man John Williams was appalled that Chicago's Christmas tree in Daley Plaza would cost around $150,000. So he sprung into action and declared that he and his friends could do it for far less -- in fact, for free! So Wednesday of this week he proved it after a little help from listeners. One listener donated the Christmas tree from his farm, a truck driver delivered it downtown for free, a hardware store donated the lights, a listener with a crane hoisted it into position and scores of listeners brought out ornaments! The 25-foot tree now stands in Tribune Tower's Nathan Hale courtyard. So what started as an angry tirade turned into what has now been dubbed "The People's Tree" and it's the talk of the windy city. With the need at an all time high, listeners are being encouraged to organize a food collection effort in their office or workplace the week of November 16th. The idea is to collect non-perishable food items and then bring them to one of the many drop off locations all over town. The effort will pay off in a big way knowing they are making a difference for those who depend on the Second Harvest Food Bank of Santa Cruz and the Food Bank of Monterey County.
